ABB Lighting vs. a DIY Retrofit: A Cost Controller’s Honest Comparison

I have managed lighting procurement for a 220-person logistics company for seven years. My annual budget for fixtures, controls, and maintenance is roughly $86,000. I track every order in a cost spreadsheet, and I have learned one thing: the first invoice is rarely the cost that matters.

In Q4 2024, I asked for quotes on relighting a 40,000 sq ft warehouse. Option B came in at $24,800. Option A, with ABB fixtures and controls, came in at $31,400. I almost pushed the purchase through at $24,800. Then I read the fine print.

An aftermarket driver may work. It may also flicker at low dimming levels, hum, or fail when the heat builds up inside the fixture.

In 2023, I assumed a replacement LED driver with the same wattage would drop into our existing fixtures. I did not verify the connector. I would choose an integrated system when I want the controls to work as a system, when there are more than a handful of sensors or switches to configure, and when my maintenance team will not be the one writing down part numbers.

I would consider a more piecemeal path only for small, isolated areas, or for decorative fixtures like that Anthropologie chandelier, where a future service call is an acceptable risk. There is nothing wrong with a simple switch and a simple fixture. The problem starts when simple components are expected to behave like a network without any integration work.

As for the original question: can you install a light switch yourself? If you are asking as a homeowner, yes, in many areas, with the breaker off and local code permission. If you are asking in a commercial building, the real question is not about the switch. It is about whether the switch, the driver, the sensor, and the commissioning process are owned by someone who will be accountable in year two.

An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I would rather spend ten minutes explaining the difference than deal with mismatched expectations later.

What I can tell you from our records is simple: compare systems, not photos. Compare commissioning, not just parts. And if a quote does not include the integration work, ask why.
