It Started With a Chandelier
Back in April 2018, I was handed my first big retrofit order. The facility was a small office building — nothing glamorous, maybe 5,000 square feet. The spec sheet said “replace all existing fixtures with modern LED solutions.”
I was 23, fresh off a supplier training, and absolutely sure I knew what I was doing.
So I ordered an iron chandelier for the lobby.
Don’t laugh. In my defense, it looked beautiful in the catalog. But that chandelier was the wrong fixture for a space that needed functional downlight lighting — and it was the first domino in a chain of preventable errors that cost about $890 in redo, plus a week of delays.
The Domino Effect
Here’s how it played out.
I’d skimmed the product description, saw “iron chandelier” and thought, classy. But the lobby had suspended ceilings with 8-foot clearance. The chandelier hung down 30 inches. You know what that meant for anyone under 6 feet? They ducked. Which is not ideal for a reception area.
The client called me within 48 hours of installation: “We can’t have visitors ducking under a light.”

The Quality Perception Reality Check
Here’s what I eventually came to understand: every visible mistake — the wrong chandelier, the pilot light mix-up, the hours spent cursing at smart bulbs — shaped how that client saw my company. Not as a competent solution provider. As the team that couldn’t even pick the right light fixture.

- Fixture type vs. application: Is this downlight lighting for a drop ceiling, or a decorative fixture for an open area?
- Color coding consistency: Does the pilot light color match the facility’s existing system?
- Setup process: Have I actually tested the “easy setup” of a smart device before specifying it for a client?
In the past 18 months, we’ve caught 47 potential errors using this checklist. Nothing dramatic — just a lot of “that pilot light should be red, not green” and “this room needs a flush mount, not a pendant.” But those catches saved an estimated $12,000 in rework.
The Lesson
I only truly believed in quality as brand perception after I experienced the alternative. The moment a client sees a fixture they didn't ask for, or a pilot light that clashes with their system, they don’t think “minor mistake.” They think “unprofessional company.”
That’s what $890 buys you — not just a redo, but a damaged perception that takes months to repair.
